Elegance 52 Curtain Walling

The design of a newly constructed building close to the entrance at Bierset Airport in Belgium depended on Sapa’s Elegance 52 curtain walling system to provide high levels of acoustic performance as well as stunning good looks.

This prestigious building is situated at the entrance of Bierset Airport between the runways and is one of the largest traffic junctions in the country.

As a key focal point of the airport complex, care had to be taken over the building’s appearance. Sapa’s Elegance 52 curtain walling system provided a high performance, elegant solution to the design brief that called for a contemporary appearance to give a light, transparent look to the building.

The demands of the acoustic performance for this building exceeded the normal sound-proofing properties of curtain walls. Furthermore the design was to incorporate opening windows within the glazed facade. The glass and the frames as well as how they are installed are all critical factors that had to be taken into account when considering the curtain walling sound-proofing qualities.

Thorough testing of the system prior to and following installation meant that Elegance 52 curtain walling fulfilled the designer’s and building occupants’ expectations in every respect.

Technical Considerations

As well as considering the glass specification, acoustic performance demands should also take into account the frame material and how it is constructed.

In order to guarantee the required level of sound-proofing, laboratory tests were carried out by the University of Liège. The elements used for testing consisted of an entire section of curtain wall, complete with windows and glazing. Testing was conducted by a recognised testing company to ascertain the performance and to calculate a sound attenuation index.

The different tests concluded that Elegance 52 complied with the acoustic performance demands of this location.
